Choker chain Dog training has received quite a bit of bad press lately. Outdated? Cruel? Not at all. It is merely the fact that many people do not know the right way to go about it.
Like all Dog training you need to know what you are doing. This is especially true in the case of using choker chains. If you are in any doubt at all about how to use one correctly you should consult a qualified Trainer.
Here is how to use a choker, or check chain, correctly:
Firstly, you should NEVER use a choker on a very young Dog or Puppy. They are not strong enough yet for such a Chain.
You should always ensure you use a correctly fitting chain and that it is the right strength for your Dog. A chain of the wrong size will cause you many problems.
A choker chain should only ever be put on your Dog when you are walking. It should never be left on. If it got caught in anything it could easily strangle itself.
A choker is used correctly by giving a quick "snap" of the chain and pulling your Dog to heel. At the same time you will also be calling your heel command.
You never keep tension on the chain for any length of time.
Keep it short. The shorter the chain the less body weight your Dog can put in to pulling. This is great advice whatever type of collar and lead or choker chain arrangement you have.
Hopefully these few simple steps will lead to a much better trained Dog in a minimal amount of time.
Remember, repetition is the key to successful Dog training.
